Minecraft Esports Coach, Fresno
I don't have this all figured out, but I've been coaching a Minecraft Esports team for a few years now, and I've picked up enough along the way that I think I can save another coach some time. For what it's worth, my team has won the Fresno Unified Minecraft Esports League 4 of the last 5 years, including two international wins against CURRO of South Africa. Not to boast, just so you know where the video I send is coming from. If you're starting a program, or thinking about it, I'd genuinely like to hear from you.
No cost, no pitch. Just a video to help you get going.
What I've Noticed
This is how I break it down for a new coach: three technical skills, and one that has nothing to do with Minecraft at all.
The logic behind command blocks, functions, and automation. This is the foundation for building anything more advanced than a plain, static map.
Circuits, timing, and contraptions. This is the mechanical skill that turns a build into something that actually works reliably in a match.
Color theory and relative sizing: how color choices guide a player's eye and read clearly at a glance, and how the scale of builds relative to the player and each other keeps a map fair and easy to navigate.
Running the group itself: clear roles, honest communication, a practice routine people can count on, and a culture kids want to show up for. Not Minecraft-specific, but just as important as the other three.
Most coaches are strong in one or two of these and missing the rest. That mix is really what the video I send is built around.
Getting Started
That's really it. Tell me a little about where your team or program stands right now, and I'll personally reply with a video that walks through how to get started: coding, redstone, design, and team work.
A few lines is plenty: your school or district, whether you already have players, and where you're stuck.
No auto-responder, no sales team. I read every email myself.
A getting-started video suited to where you're at, so you can move forward without guessing.
A Few Questions
No. Emailing me and getting the video costs nothing. I'm doing this because I think more coaches should get a faster start than I did.
No. If you're starting from nothing, that's exactly who this is for.
No. I'm an independent coach sharing what I've learned. This isn't an official Minecraft product and isn't approved by or associated with Mojang or Microsoft.
